Summary: Introduction: Sporotrichosis is the infectious disease caused by a thermo-dimorphic
fungus included in the genus Sporothrix, found in soil and organic matter all over the
world and capable of causing human and animal disease. The most frequent pathogenic
mechanism for the human disease is the inoculation of the agent through the skin either
directly from the environment or by zoonotic transmission. Currently, it is considered an
uncommon disease in the state of Espírito Santo, with a stable number of new diagnoses
in the last 30 years, but with geographic-climatic epidemiology not yet described.
Material and methods: In this study, we used the historical series of cases diagnosed
at the Infectious Diseases Service of the Hospital Universitário Cassiano Antônio Moraes
(HUCAM) between July 1982 and June 2015 and proceeded its georeferencing. For this
analysis, we chose to use the 19 climatic variables provided by WorldClim, derived from
temperature and rainfall, and the environmental variable altitude. Analysis was
performed using the Modeling of Species Distribution, through the theory of maximum
entropy, with Maxent algorithm. Results: A total 125 cases were included in the final
analysis allowing to conclude the association between the studied variables and the
occurrence of Sporothrix spp. in this state. Thermal seasonality, altitude and rainfall in
the wettest month were those that contributed most to the presence of pathogenic
species of Sporothrix causing human disease. The map generated approximates the
expected areas of occurrence in this state. Conclusions: This study presents, for the
first time, the map of occurrence of sporotrichosis in the state of Espírito Santo and
confirms the association of its distribution with variations in temperature, rainfall and
altitude, as well as identifies the areas of greatest probability of occurrence of the fungus.
